Tall Paul Back & Forth
by Jordan Lanier
Tall Paul's newest release is a first-rate artist album. Back & Forth is being released on Moonshine
Music as well as Duty Free Recordings, Paul's own label. Tall Paul has come a long way from getting
his first big break in his dad's club, Turnmills, at the age of 16. Back & Forth was preceded
by Paul's release of Mixed Live at Giant in L.A., also on Moonshine Music. But this artist album
is a great glimpse into what Paul has been concocting in the studio, instead of the club.
On Back & Forth, Paul has two well-done remixes of the unmistakable INXS tune, "Never Tear
Us Apart". The Lush Remix of "Precious Heart" seemed to be a little too slow, however. With this
album, Paul takes a step away from his big house sound that never ceases to fill dance floors. It
is a much more melodic sound than what you get from Paul in his live sets, yet still has the
momentum to make you want to move. Track 2, "Go Get It", is a particularly good example of this precise
combination of melody and rhythm. Track 9, "Freebase", is just that - lots of bass! All in all,
this is a damn good album showcasing Tall Paul's production capabilities, however different the
end result may be from his mix CD's.
