Tiga - DJ Kicks
by dK
Ever notice the mention of Pop / Kitsch while looking through new releases online or in your local record shop and wondered what the heck that meant? Time to wonder no longer. 29 year old Montreal native Tiga, introduces a mix on Germany's K7 label that focuses on a sound that has had quite an impact on the international music scene over the past several months. If you've ever bought any records on labels such as DJ Hell's Giggilo imprint or Ghostly International I think you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Take a little electro pop from the 80's and mix it with the dark deep side of techno and you'll get the picture. I have to admin you have to be careful when buying records of this genre because the cheese factor can be high if the 80s part the equation is mixed in too heavily. In the case of Tiga's mix, he's created a balance of the kitsch sound mixed in and out of some nice hypnotic techhouse jams. Cuts range from simple beat tracks, to lush rhythmic synth tracks, to an occasional vocal cut mixed in between. Even though we are talking about a CD here, I also have to mention that DJs should look out for the vinyl release of some of the mixed tracks. K7 did a great job gathering the best of the mix and putting all in one convenient double pack for us to grab. No needing to hunt down all those hard as heck to find singles.
This one will jump at you as soon as it hits your CD deck, so look out...
