  Winter Music Conference 2005
Conference 2005 Coverage   Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Ultra
by Lana 'Kit' Towne

the beach I actually got up in time to go to the beach. It is possible to do both Conference and bum about the beach. I layed out for an hour or so and just soaked up some sun and listened to the waves.

the beach Then it was back to the room, shower, and another change of clothes so we could go get some lunch. We went to Sushi Samba which is this Sushi/Latin fusion restaurant along the Lincoln Mall strip. The food was okay but the service sucked beyond belief. It took us over two hours to complete our meal and the only main course we ordered was a simple raw bar!!! Not to mention the fact that the table who came in twenty minutes after us ordered and completed their meal almost half an hour before we were done. But then we walked around Lincoln Mall for the afternoon which was nice. the beach Music, check. Beach, check. Shopping, check. Check out this funny sign!

We took it easy rest of the day, because tonight was going to be the marathon.

For dinner we went to this little place called Tea for Two. The menu had sushi and Italian food and we were intrigued. Turns out, this place was pretty far off South Beach and when we got there, we realized it was very much a family style, neighborhoody sort of restaurant. But the food turned out to be okay, and the service was great which was a huge plus at that point.

Rene Amesz That night we decided to hit Spin again—Sander Kleinenberg presents LMR Record Label Party with Nic Fanciulli, Matthew Dekay. Sander Kleinenberg actually was not on the lineup itself, so no one was sure if he was going to deejay. One of the first surprises of the night was Rene Amesz, opening up in place of Audio Magnetics (no show?). He played a good set and no one missed Audio Magnetics not making it, and then it was surprise #2, Stef Vrolijk—another name not on the original lineup. Stef had a pretty short set and then it was Nic Fanciulli. Now he played some really twisted funky electro acid stuff with crazy vocals that made everybody in the club just jump up and down. "You have five minutes to surrender..." and "Robots want to kill me..." [ed. This may be James Zabiela's "Ramonphobia"]. What a good choice that was! These guys made me dance like there was no tomorrow.

Nic Fanciulli Matthew Dekay was supposed to come after Nic. Or so we thought. The set started off really well and kept up the rockin' pace that Nic left off with. But fairly quickly the set started to sound really familiar and when we looked up at the screen we realized the Sander Kleinenburg DVJ show was going on. So basically what it turned out to be was Sander Kleinenburg playing instead of Matthew Dekay, which was a major disappointment since we had just heard him the Saturday before we left. In fact, he played nearly the exact same sequence of 80's remix—"Mr Roboto," "Cruel Summer," some Howard Jones track and "Owner of a Lonely Heart." It was a great set and it was one of those that if we hadn't heard it before would have left me stomping my feet, clapping my hands and jumping up and down; but as it was, we decided to leave at about 3:30 a.m. and head over to the Tsunami Relief party at Macarena to finish the evening off. We got there just in time to catch the last few tracks of Eve Falcon's set and next up was Mr. Jason Blum of Deepsky. From 4-4:55 a.m. it was hardcore trance. Jason still knows how to wear us out and make us dance like ravers. It was a blast and we briefly contemplated after party but decided to call it a night.
