  Winter Music Conference 2005
Conference 2005 Coverage   Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Ultra
by Lana 'Kit' Towne

Saturday morning we again ventured down to Lincoln Mall to look for a panini. Someone recommended Van Dyke Cafι for good panini's so we gave it a shot. I had a portabella and goat cheese panini and it was really good. We wandered around Lincoln Mall for a bit and did a little shopping then went back to the hotel to decide what we wanted to do that night. We briefly entertained the idea of Ultra [read about Ultra coverage here] but since there wasn't anyone we were absolutely dying to see we abstained. We had been thinking all week that we were going to see Carl Cox tonight but we had a momentary crisis of conscience when we realized we would be missing Sasha and Digweed together in Miami. We debated for a moment about going downtown but decided that since Digweed was coming to Atlanta next weekend and that we never get Cox that we would do that.

We showered and changed and headed off early for fear that because it was Crobar we needed to be early or stand in line all night. We stopped off at Pizza Rustica (yum!) for a quick bite to eat and then headed next door. No line when we got there at 11ish but a $ 50 cover (ouch). Oh well, it is one of the biggest clubs in the city. I had never been so we did a bit of wandering around when we got inside. It's such an impressive club. It's huge and I'm glad I got to see it before it got all trashed because it really is very pretty. The opening dj in the main room was Yousef. I had never heard him before but he played some really funky house. Now, I'm not normally a huge fan of house so I don't know if it was just Crobar's Phazon sound system or if he was really that good but I dug it. There was really no crowd whatsoever even as of midnight, so there was plenty of room to dance which was kind of nice.

By 1 a.m. it was starting to get fairly crowded and Yousef switched to playing more tech house I assume to lead up to Cox. We were on the dancefloor when Carl hit the decks and the place erupted! He brought the dark driving techno that we all expected and we loved him for it. And in the middle of the set he dropped this really jazzy Sunrise track that I liked but some people didn't. He also played the Woo-Hoo [Blur?] song which seemed a little bit cheesy but the crowd liked it. And people can say what they like but until I hear otherwise I will never believe that there is a more perfect sound for that system than techno. And I don't even particularly like techno most of the time. But Carl Cox just destroyed that place, everyone there was nuts for him. People were dancing in the hallways, the dancefloor was packed, the place was humid and not because of the Miami humidity. It was great, it was like a true club night. I didn't realize how much I missed those. All the same at 4 we decided to head over to Amika to catch a set by the lovely Ms. Eve Falcon and show some support. We had no idea it would turn out to be a 30 min set but we enjoyed it all the same. We then grabbed a final bite of pizza to finish off the night and headed back to the hotel to shower and decide what to do next which turned out to be sleeping.

We spent a few extra days just winding down and relaxing a little before we had to come back to Atlanta. Overall, it was the best vacation I've had in years. We didn't do everything but that turned out to be kind of nice because I had the energy to truly enjoy the things I liked. And I was surprised how great the food was. And it's Miami... well, do I really have to say anything?
