  Winter Music Conference 2005
Conference 2005 Coverage   Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Ultra
by Lana 'Kit' Towne

Friday morning we slept in again and then it was back to News Café where I had a yummy feta cheese omlette (and ran into some people from Atlanta). We had to take care of some stuff during the afternoon (and ran into DJ Kai Alce and company, from Atlanta). Kai Alce In fact, there were enough Atlanta people everywhere, it was like a weekend in Midtown.

For Friday night we decided we were going to hit up Jazid for R. Devine and Matthew Dear and then head over to Steve Porter. Jazid first, we got there just as Richard Devine was finishing up. He was playing upstairs and the sound was awful. I mean really, really bad. The speakers were cutting in and out. When Richard got off he was pretty upset about the whole thing despite reassurances that it wasn't as bad as he thought. Matthew Dear was supposed to play upstairs after a duo called Kill Memory Crash but due to the sound issues they decided to move him downstairs. We made our way downstairs, about 30 minutes into Kill Memory Crash's set, so we could stake out a spot for Matthew Dear and the downstairs was packed. We stood around for a few minutes waiting for Matthew to set his stuff up again and then he got started. He had been playing for about 10 minutes when the sound downstairs cut out completely. And it didn't come back on. We had been standing there for 5 more minutes waiting for them to figure out what was going on before they were finally able to fix it. And just after the sound came back on the fire marshall walked in. And by that I mean he literally walked in the door took two steps into the crowd, shook his head and turned around and walked out. It was that packed in there. We decided that this was our cue to leave because we figured they would be clearing out the club soon anyway.

So we headed on over to State for Steve Porter. To be honest I don't remember who was opening for him and we only heard the last little bit of his set anyway. It was pretty crowded but I think that might be more due to the fact that it was a free party than because Steve Porter. Not to say Porter isn't good, he really impressed me last time I heard him which is why I was excited to go see him but it just seemed like the crowd, for the most part really had no idea what was going on. Porter, however, did not seem to be at the top of his game. I don't know if he was tired because it was the end of the week or messed up or what but he didn't have the same fire that he had the last time he was in Atlanta. His mixes were choppy at times and there seemed to be no real programming to the set, like he just kind of played whatever, whenever. Of course, that's just my opinion, some people thought he was phenomenal. Either way, we decided to take off at 3:45 and call it a night.
