Qbert and Dstyles by Melissa Howell This interview was conducted at an Outerlimits party in June 2001 in Greenville, South Carolina. Lunar: Do you two ever go out and party, or are you more of a homebody type? Dstyles: We have friends we go out with and kick it with. We go out to watch jazz bands. Lunar: What is your favorite genre of music? Dstyles: Jazz and scratching. Lunar: What inspired you to start scratching? Qbert: Just messin' around on the tables. Lunar: How old were you when you started scratching? Qbert and Dstyles: Fifteen. Lunar: What is behind the names Qbert and Dstyles? Qbert and Dstyles: They were from high schoolwe had tons of names in high school. Lunar: What did your parents think of you scratching? Qbert and Dstyles: THEY HATED IT! But they have gotten used to it now. Lunar: Do you see turntabalisim being just as popular 10 years from now? Dstyles: Probably more popular! Lunar: Do you ever see turntabalisim taking over? Qbert: Naw, there will still be both. Lunar: Are you guys working on anything right now? Dstyles: I am working on a solo album. It should be out in September. Lunar: What should we expect from it? Dstyles: It is more of a darker hip hopthere will be a lot of obscure stuff, like early '80s hip hop on it. Lunar: What direction do you see the scene heading in? Dstyles: I don't think you can stop the parties. If they ban something, they will do it somewhere else. Lunar: You have been doing this for so long...people get burnt out...what inspires you to keep going out and doing this? Dstyles: I think we are always getting better. There is so much more music and techniques to be discovered. We are still hungry to learn. It's a life long process of continued learning! We didn't have much time for an interview, but in those ten or fifteen minutes of being around Qbert and Dstyles I learned a lot. Their energy is amazing!
